Join us to celebrate the upcoming AAPI Cultural Heritage Month in May! We are thrilled to announce the inaugural State of AAPI Forum 2024 on Friday, May 3rd in the Student Union. Space is limited. The event is hosted by the Chancellor’s Commission for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. It is an inspiring and interactive event dedicated to sharing stories, experiences, research, and insights on topics related to the Asian American and Pacific experience. The half-day event will conclude with a movie screening and discussion of a mind-twisting, Academy Award Best Picture Parasite, a South Korean dark comedy thriller film. All events open to the public, please note that the Movie is rated R and may not be appropriate for audiences of all ages.

Join Multicultural Student Life, the Pride Center, and the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Program for a screening of the Pixar movie, Turning Red. After the movie, the MSL Diversity Educators will facilitate a conversation about the film’s representation and major themes.

About the film: In Turning Red, Mei Lee is a confident, dorky thirteen-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. And as if changes to her interests, relationships, and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which for a teenager is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! This heartwarming and hilarious movie addresses themes of growing up, honoring one’s cultural heritage, and forging a new path ahead.

Invent2Prevent

The Office of Asia Engagement and the Global Security Program at the Howard Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy announced a call for student applications for the Invent2Prevent program sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Students will design and implement a tool or creative initiative addressing discrimination, extremism, and violence against Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the US. Students will have the ability to earn credit, have access to an operating budget, and may even be able to present their work at DHS in Washington, D.C. Click to learn more and sign up.

Join the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities for a special webinar in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month featuring five Asian Pacific American leaders in public higher education. Register here!

During this event, the featured speakers will discuss their own personal journey from growing up to becoming campus leaders. They will discuss the important role Asian American and Pacific Islander students, faculty, and staff play on campus and in their communities as well as how university leadership can best support them while recognizing and honoring the diverse composition of the community. The conversation will also explore the troubling increase in verbal attacks and physical violence against members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, including how campuses are working to raise awareness and ensure the safety for the AAPI community while fostering an inclusive environment.
