International Student and Scholar Services Office Announces Spring 2023 Assessment

The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office at the Center for Global Engagement has released the spring 2023 assessment report which includes facts and figures on the number of international students, staff, faculty, researchers and exchange visitors that the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, hosted during the spring 2023 semester.  

The ISSS office is committed to offering immigration advising and support services to the international student and scholar population at UT.  

Last semester the ISSS office supported a total of 1,108 international students; 703 international faculty, staff and researchers; and 217 exchange visitors to study, work, conduct research or participate in an exchange visit to UT. 

International Students 

International students provide valuable talent in critical disciplines, drive regional economic development and add a global perspective to the university. 

UT’s international students provide a direct economic benefit to Tennessee’s 2nd Congressional District by contributing $35.7 million and supporting 411 jobs. 

During the spring 2023 semester, UT hosted 894 international graduate students and 214 international undergraduate students from a total of 98 countries.

International Faculty, Staff and Researchers 

International faculty, staff and researchers connect UT to a global research network, fill vital gaps in expertise and promote the university’s global presence.

Immigration sponsorship of faculty, staff and researchers, led by the ISSS office, connects UT to a global research network of 266 institutions across 42 countries. This includes 34 of the top 100 ranked institutions in the world (per the Times Higher Education World University Rankings). 

These include institutions in the United States such as Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology and Yale University. Immigration sponsorship also connects UT to Asian universities like Tsinghua University, Peking University, University of Hong Kong and Seoul National University. The ISSS office is also involved in connecting UT to Europe and Australia with such institutions as the University of Oxford, Sorbonne University and Australian National University.  

Exchange Visitors 

Exchange visitors engage in special programs designed by academic departments, facilitate exchange partnerships, complete student and public-private partnership internships and conduct research. Exchange visitors are a critical part of UT’s global partnership and research network.  

During the spring 2023 semester, exchange visitors were primarily research scholars which made up 63% of all exchange visitors. Other types of exchange visitors include visiting professors, student interns and doctoral students.

About the International Student and Scholar Services Office 

The International Student and Scholar Services office is a dedicated, professional team committed to supporting the international community at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The office helps international students navigate the F and J visa process, adjust to the campus culture and pursue opportunities as alumni. The team assists the campus community with the sponsorship and retention of J, H1-B, O, TN and Permanent Resident faculty and staff. The office serves as compliance liaisons between the campus community and the Student Exchange Visitor Program, provide training and advisement to campus stakeholders and advocate for internationalization best practices.
