INTERNATIONAL UNDERGRADUATE MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

The University of Tennessee’s International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship (IUMS) is an academic merit-based award of 5,000 USD to 8,000 USD per year (2,500 USD to 4,000 USD per semester), awarded on a competitive basis to freshman and transfer student applicants. The scholarship is renewable for up to 8 semesters of study for freshmen or 4 semesters for transfer students. The International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship is awarded to high achieving students whose tuition costs are not supported by governmental, organizational, or corporate sponsorship.

Eligibility for International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship

In order to be considered for the IUMS, students must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be an international student* completing high school in a foreign country or in the United States; or
  • Be an international student* entering UT directly from a foreign or U.S. university; or
  • Be an international student* who has completed (or is completing) an associate’s degree from an
    accredited U.S. college.

In order to receive the IUMS:

  • Applicants must be degree-seeking international students on a temporary visa to study in the U.S.;
  • Students must not be eligible for U.S. federal funding financial aid;
  • Students must not be eligible for in-state (resident) tuition;
  • Students who are dual citizens and/or permanent residents are not eligible.

All eligible international undergraduate students who are offered regular (non-conditional) admission to the University of Tennessee-Knoxville are automatically considered for the International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship. Students should submit all application materials before the program priority deadline in order to receive maximum consideration.

Selection Guidelines

Freshmen

English: TOEFL (iBT) 80 or higher, IELTS 6.5 or higher, ACT English or SAT critical reading scores will also be considered.

GPA: 3.75/4.0 as determined by the University of Tennessee and/or credential evaluation from a NACES accredited organization.

Other aspects of a student’s application may also be considered.

Transfer students

English: English: TOEFL (iBT) 80 or higher, IELTS 6.5 or higher, or a minimum grade of “B” on University-level equivalent of English composition 1 and 2 at a U.S college or university. ACT English or SAT critical reading scores will also be considered.

GPA: Transfer students: 3.75/4.0 as determined by the University of Tennessee and/or credential evaluation from a NACES organization.

Other aspects of a student’s application may also be considered.

Priority Deadlines

All applications are automatically considered for the scholarship. Due to limited availability, it is highly recommended that an application be submitted at least 2 months before the application deadline

If awarded a scholarship, students must notify the University and confirm enrollment by May 1.

Students who decide earlier than May 1 receive housing priority.

Recipient Guidelines

Maintain a 3.0 yearly cumulative grade point average while at the University of Tennessee.

Maintain full-time enrollment status each semester and academic progress.

*Note: “International student” is defined as a degree-seeking student on a temporary visa to study in the U.S. who is not be eligible for federal funding nor eligible for in-state (resident) tuition.
