UT campus celebrates International Education Week

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, observed International Education Week Nov. 18-22 with events across campus designed to engage students, faculty and staff.

Kicking off the week was a busy Monday that included a virtual study abroad activity with the International Business Club, a lecture from forensic linguist Russell Kaschula and an Arabic Friendsgiving dinner at the student union among others.

Kaschula spoke as a collaboration between the Center for Global Engagement, the UT College of Law, and was sponsored by the International Law Student Association, Department of English, Department of Sociology, Department of Anthropology, Department of Africana Studies, Denbo Center for the Humanities and the Arts, Linguistics Program, Forensic Anthropology Center and Global Studies Program.

The lecture focused on Kaschula’s pioneering work in the field of forensic linguistics in South Africa, the ways in which language can be a barrier in the court room and the ways even the use of Emojis can be tied to criminal intent.

CGE concluded its activites for the week with a keynote speech from Robert Schiffer, a UT alumnus, advisor to Fulbright University Vietnam and seasoned leader in diplomacy and global education.

Drawing on extensive experience, including his role in the restoration of U.S.-Vietnam diplomatic relations during the Clinton Administration, Schiffer explored the vital interplay between democracy and diplomacy in shaping a shared global future. His reflections highlighted the enduring impact of programs like Fulbright in fostering international collaboration and more.

Beyond his address at the Baker School, he engaged with campus stakeholders, reconnected with a former classmate, and captivated an engaged group of students at the post-keynote reception, leaving a memorable impression on our community.

Other highlights from the week included:

International Business Club “Study Abroad with Virtual Reality
