A New Workshop from the Center for Global Engagement and the Center for Career Success and Academic Excellence
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is proud to announce the success of a new workshop developed by Dr. Danielle Walters, COIL Manager, and Stephanie Kit, Executive Director of the Center for Career Development and Academic Exploration.
Titled “Linking COIL to Career Readiness,” this innovative workshop aligns the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Readiness competencies with the learning outcomes of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) projects.
COIL is a transformative approach to education that connects students and faculty across international borders through digital collaboration, fostering a truly global learning experience. Recognizing the immense potential of COIL to prepare students for the global workforce, Stephanie Kit and Dr. Walters designed this workshop to explicitly link COIL experiences with essential career competencies identified by NACE.
The workshop materials emphasize how participating in COIL projects can enhance key career readiness skills such as critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and global/intercultural fluency. By participating in COIL, students not only gain academic knowledge but also develop skills that are highly valued in today’s interconnected and multicultural job market.
We are thrilled to share that the Stevens Initiative, a leading organization promoting virtual exchange programs, has selected our workshop materials for their 2024 Spring Breakout Campaign. This recognition underscores the importance and impact of our work in integrating COIL with career readiness and highlights UT’s commitment to innovative educational practices.
The “Linking COIL to Career Readiness” workshop is offered to students who complete a COIL course at UT, providing them with a unique opportunity to reflect on their experiences and articulate how these experiences have prepared them for their future careers. This workshop not only enhances students’ understanding of the practical benefits of their COIL participation but also equips them with the language and confidence to convey these benefits to potential employers.
We are immensely proud of this achievement and are excited to continue fostering the professional growth of our students through the intersection of COIL and career readiness.
