The Academy for Global Scholars (AGS), led by Doug Terry and Annastasia Williams, traveled to Costa Rica for a week-long service learning experience from May 8-15. The AGS study abroad program served as a capstone for students’ participation in the AGS program this year, where they took courses together to prepare them for an experience abroad and develop skills in intercultural communication and global citizenship. The AGS students are all first-year, first generation college students from various majors on campus.
While abroad, students explored Costa Rica visiting Isla Tortuga, La Paz Waterfall, historical sites in San Jose, and more. They stayed with local homestay families and served at Parque La Libertad, a local park in a low-income neighborhood in San Jose that provides job training, recreation activities for both kids and adults, and community gardens. The AGS students were incredibly grateful to CGE for this opportunity and Doug and Annastasia look forward to seeing the program grow and improve in the coming years.
